Women in the legal profession face a range of challenges from unconscious bias and low retention rates to underrepresentation in leadership roles and barriers to career progression. While awareness of the issues is increasing, practical steps are needed at the individual as well as firm or organisational level to support the advancement and retention of women lawyers.
Against this backdrop, NZ Lawyer presented Women in Law 2017, a new professional development opportunity for both private practice and in-house lawyers focused on helping women succeed in the current environment, be recognised as leaders and influence cultural change. Peers joined for a transformative day that improved personal communication and leadership skills and facilitated in the peer exchange of ideas that will drive the legal profession forward towards a more balanced and equal future.
